A Conversation with Dr. Richard Weissbourd
On October 29, The Hewitt School will convene an important and timely conversation about how young people can balance ethical engagement and meaningful achievement as they make their way to and through college, and as they navigate their careers and lives. This conversation will feature Dr. Richard Weissbourd, faculty director of Making Caring Common, a project of the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Following the lecture, Head of School Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey will interview Dr. Weissbourd about what parents and educators can do to mitigate the mounting pressure that young people face in today’s achievement-driven culture. This event will address some of the most pressing questions on parents’ minds today.

Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Richard Weissbourd is a senior lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he co-directs the Human Development and Psychology Program, and at the Kennedy School of Government. His work focuses on moral development, vulnerability, and resilience in childhood, and effective schools and services for children. He directs the Making Caring Common Project, a national effort to make moral and social development priorities in child-raising and to provide strategies to schools and parents for promoting in children caring, a commitment to justice, and other key moral and social capacities. He leads an important initiative to reshape college admissions. This initiative, Turning the Tide, has engaged almost 200 colleges in elevating ethical character, reducing excessive achievement pressure, and increasing equity and access in the college admissions process.
Dr. Weissbourd has advised on the city, state and federal levels on family policy and school reform, and founded a pilot school in Boston, the Lee Academy, and several interventions for at-risk children. A highly respected expert, Dr. Weissbourd has written for numerous scholarly and popular publications and blogs, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR, and is the author of acclaimed books on child development and education.
